I was feeling a bit under the weather earlier in the day but come home time I felt good enough to take the drive out to Perry Barr. I had gone to Alexander Stadium, home of Birchfield Harriers, to meet up with some fellow walkers there.

I did come here last week (LINK) to see about race walking and ended up with Dave for a bit of a walk in the nearby Perry Park.

After parking the car, I went to the club’s reception and filled in a membership form. I am allowed eight visits to the club , to see if I like it, before I need to pay the annual membership. This is number one (I got away with it last week!).

I paid £2.50 for this session and was presented with this snazzy green wrist band.

I waited in the communal area for a few minutes before Dave appeared with his mate Julian. After introductions we made our way trackside and collected some javelins! Chucking spears is Dave’s idea of a warm up so I humoured him and threw a few until my right arm protested.

We, then, did a couple of tempo laps trying to get as close to three minutes per lap before going out into Perry Park for a progressively quicker 5k walk. The last mile was at 11:50 pace – nice!

After a couple of laps that constituted a cool down, we had a chat over a beer before we left with calls of “See you next week!”
