What makes this one different ? to be honest, not a lot !
A little history – Since taking up walking seriously a few years ago, I have covered over 1000 miles each year by either walking, running or, in most years, a mixture of the two.
Last year, due to a recurring knee problem (see below) and a general malaise, I only managed 735.
To assist me in getting back up to 1000 miles, I have signed up for the Country Walking 1000 miles scheme (LINK). I’ve ordered the badge which will soon adorn my rucksack.
Also, having to maintain this blog should motivate me to get out of the front door and clock up some miles.
Sometime last year, I noticed that my right knee was a lot bigger than the left. It also felt a little sore and often the joint felt dry and grinding when walking. I visited the doctor who took a sample of fluid from the joint to check for gout which came back negative.
I continued walking when I felt like it but finally returned to the doctor before Christmas. My doctor would not tell me what the problem was but referred me to the knee clinic. I went online to book an appointment and was somewhat surprised when a date in January came back.
For a second opinion, I consulted Dr. Google and the symptoms point to Arthritis but I should know better after my consultation on the eleventh.
Until I know better I shall walk, but only a few miles at a time. To achieve 1000 miles in a year equates to around 2.74 miles per day. Walking from the bus stop to work counts as a miles so with nothing else I’ll clock up (1+1)*5*48 or 480 miles – nearly half way there !
